Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Australia and the Signs You Actually Need One

A switchboard upgrade is one of those jobs people put off until an inspector, an insurer or a solar installer forces the issue. The switchboard is the point where the incoming mains split into the circuits that feed your lights, power points, oven and hot water, and it is also where the safety devices that protect you and the wiring live. If it is old, full or missing modern protection, everything downstream is running on borrowed time.
What a switchboard upgrade costs
There is no single price, because "upgrade" covers everything from swapping a couple of fuses for circuit breakers through to a full board replacement with a new enclosure, main switch, consumer mains and a bank of RCBOs. As a rough guide for a standard single-phase home in 2026, expect somewhere between 800 and 2,500 dollars for a straightforward board replacement with residual current protection added. Jobs that need the meter box relocated, asbestos backing removed, a three-phase upgrade or new consumer mains run from the point of attachment can climb well past 3,500 dollars.
The variables that move the number most are:
- Whether the enclosure and meter box need replacing or just the internals.
- How many circuits need their own RCBO (per-circuit protection costs more than shared RCDs but is far better, and we explain why in RCD, RCBO and circuit breaker explained).
- Whether you are moving from single to three-phase to support an EV charger or a large solar and battery system.
- Old asbestos backing boards, which must be removed under controlled conditions and add cost.
Always get an itemised written quote, and be wary of a number given over the phone before anyone has opened the board.
Signs you need one
You do not need to be an electrician to spot most of the warning signs:
- Ceramic rewireable fuses. If your board still has porcelain fuse holders with fuse wire, it predates modern protection. It will have no RCDs, and rewiring a blown fuse with the wrong gauge wire is a genuine fire risk.
- No RCDs (safety switches). Since the 2018 Wiring Rules, socket outlet and lighting circuits in homes require residual current protection. Older boards often have none. A safety switch is what disconnects power in the fraction of a second it takes to save someone from a fatal shock.
- A full board with no spare ways. If every slot is used, adding a circuit for an air conditioner, a pool, a shed or a charger means there is physically nowhere to land it.
- Buzzing, scorch marks, a hot board or a burning smell. These point to loose connections or overloaded circuits and should be looked at urgently.
- Breakers that trip constantly, flickering lights when appliances start, or an oven and kettle that cannot run together without nuisance tripping.
Why solar and EVs so often trigger the job
Two modern additions are the most common reason a homeowner suddenly finds their board is not up to scratch. A solar and battery installer will not connect a new system to a non-compliant board, and adding a battery often needs spare ways and correct isolation. If you are buying second-hand solar to save money, read the used solar inverter and battery checklist first, because the switchboard work is a real part of that total cost.
Home EV charging is the other trigger. A 7kW wallbox draws around 32A continuously, which is a serious sustained load, and it needs its own protected circuit with the correct RCD type. On a full or single-phase board that frequently means an upgrade before the charger can even be installed.
Compliance: this is licensed work
Replacing or modifying a switchboard is fixed electrical wiring work. In Australia it is illegal for an unlicensed person to carry out this work, and doing it yourself is not only dangerous but voids insurance and can attract heavy penalties. A licensed electrician must do the work, test it and issue the certificate of compliance (called a certificate of electrical safety or certificate of compliance for electrical work depending on your state). Keep that certificate: it is your proof the board is safe and legal, and buyers and insurers will ask for it.

Getting it done well
Book two or three licensed electricians for quotes, and give them the same brief so the numbers are comparable. Ask them to specify whether they are fitting shared RCDs or individual RCBOs, whether the meter box and consumer mains are included, and how long the power will be off. A good electrician will happily explain the difference.
